Nurse Edit Zapata wins Daisy Award

December 18, 2025

The Institute was pleased to recognize Nurse Edit Zapata, LPN, of the Pine Street Family Health Center, as the winner of the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This award, which draws from nominations from patients, staff and community members, recognizes the care and dedication that nurses show toward our patients. On December 16, Nurse Zapata was honored at an awards ceremony at Pine Street.

Nurse Zapata was nominated by a nurse from the Department of Health, commenting on Nurse Zapata’s dedication and success in reaching a family regarding a child with an abnormal lead level, which can lead to permanent health issues if not addressed. Here is an excerpt from the nomination (edited for length and clarity):

“The Department of Health had multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact the child’s parents for over a year and a half. Despite these challenges, Nurse Zapata remained persistent. Through her repeated outreach, she was able to contact the child’s parents, clearly communicate the importance of the lead test, and ultimately motivate the parents to have the child tested. Thanks to her efforts, the child was tested and reported normal results. Nurse Zapata continues to go above and beyond her responsibilities to meet our patient’s needs. This is a powerful reminder of the impact one person’s dedication can have on the lives of our patients. Thank you, Nurse Zapata, for your compassion, dedication, and exceptional work.”
